Our thoughts are with the people of Haiti and SOIL, our grantee partner there, as that nation confronts an economic and political crisis. Access to water, food, electricity, fuel and transportation have all become a challenge. Schools are closed and supplies at hospitals are dangerously low. For families already struggling to get by on a day-to-day basis, the challenges caused by dramatically increased costs for basic necessities are unspeakable. People from all walks of life have been in the streets almost daily for weeks calling for accountability and political change in the face of an uncertain future. Through blocked roads, scarce supplies, and rising prices SOIL’s dedicated staff has continued to ensure not only that people have access to hygienic sanitation services but also that collected waste is transformed into usable compost. SOIL’s pioneering approaches to sustainable sanitation service delivery combine innovative service delivery models with a strategic approach to financial sustainability. The wisdom of their is being demonstrated by their resiliency in facing the current challenges.
