The New North Carolina Project (NNCPF) began with a vision to create a groundswell of lifelong voters. Rather than talking at people of color and asking them to adapt to white priorities, they listen and collaborate to get their own needs met first.
In their first full year of operations, community organizers and volunteers knocked on over 60,000 doors, reached over 2 million people by text, and broke the mold with messaging that spoke to people of color "the way we speak at home." Joining forces with movement partners, they helped to launch democracy fellowships at every HBCU in North Carolina, hosted food drives, clothing drives, and town halls for housing and healthcare expansion. Their idea is simply to engage with folks to build relationships and trust and then to use that power to get people to the polls. NNCPF works around their BIPOC PROCLAMATION and its four pillars: Economic Mobility, Housing Security, Public Safety and Civic Engagement. Every one of these centers around the importance of VOTING.
The NNCPF works to increase voting access and activity by incorporating "Get Out the Vote" work into broader initiatives addressing community needs as defined by communities themselves. This smart, strategic approach leverages limited resources and allows progress to be made on multiple fronts simultaneously. Pennywise is proud to support NNCPF's groundbreaking vision.
