Maher has provided shelter and care to destitute women and children in and around Pune, India since 1997. Maher strives to Identify and understand the root causes of violence and despair experienced by women and children in India and to develop and deliver services to address them. They also work to enable sustainable communities by addressing economic, education, health and environmental issues confronting underserved Indian communities

Maher has now started additional centers in Ratnagiri, Kerala and Jharkand. The Jharkand project stalled, however, because the facility need water. To get that water, Maher needed funds to purchase a borewell. Funds from a Pennywise grant made that possible and the construction moved forward. 

Maher had a tangible, specific need. They had identified a way in which a small monetary investment amount would have a large impact over long periods of time. Pennywise was excited to be able to help them meet that need.
