JMJU’s mission is to shift power and mobilize Maine youth in rural and under-resourced communities to be critical players in building a just and sustainable Maine. We are pioneering a model that centers the realities of rural Maine youth while building strong political power for climate action.
Maine is the most rural state in the country and needs organizing models that truly embrace the nuances required to advance civic engagement and climate justice outside of urban centers. Their vision is to:
● Prioritize youth in northern towns and rural Maine communities
● Build content for youth that come out of their specific community and experience
● Pay youth for their work
● Focus on climate justice AND civic engagement
● Build sustainable organizing structures beyond the 4-year student turnover cycle
● Increase representation and diversity in civic engagement and environmental work
● Generate hope through youth projects and providing resources to make a difference
